What The Libby Verdict Means to The Bush Legacy
Still in the making, Bush's Legacy to Americans will surely be one of war, one of an unprecedented fight against islamic extremists, yeah, one of ridding the globe of terrorists. The definition of terrorists as understood by Bush may be what would take many scholars to task. And the merits that saw us move into Iraq would surely come under cross-examination. Those are foreign issues better understood by foreigners and no matter how surreal they seem to Americans right now, domestic issues may as well substitute in the making of the Bush legacy.
Top among the domestic issues that are sure to tarnish the Bush Legacy will be the outing of a CIA worker's identity to the press. It may not be just because it is illegal to do so but so much because of who had to pay for the mistakes of others. Lewis Libby would be pitied as the fall guy and many will stand to question what the Plame investigation was all about. "Scooter" Libby wasn't guilty of outing Plame's identity to reporters rather of subsidiary attachments that came with the case. Indeed, the guy guilty of outing Plame's identity was Richard Armitrange; then number two guy at The State Department and the Special Prosecutor knew all this from the word go but decided to continue the case. It's very interesting to see what Bush will do regarding Libby's impeding jail time. Hint: Pardon is not entirely out of the question.
