INTRIGUING: Obama's Family Owned Slaves
In yet another ironic twist to an overly twisted and yet to be told story, it emerged last night that the Obama extended family did indeed own slaves. While it has been known that Obama is a son of a Kenyan Economist and a Kansan mother, little, until now, has been done to fully understand who this Kansan mother is and what values she stood for. But yesterday's revelation doesn't tell us much about the Kansan mother, but, most importantly, the mother figure opens the ancestral window for us to see clearly what an earlier Obama family stood for. One of Obama's great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned two slaves who were recorded in the 1850 census in Nelson County, Ky., according to an article released today by David Nitkin and Harry Merritt, SUN reporters. The SUN also reported that Obama's great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two slaves.
While this new information may not have anything to do with the person of Obama or what he stands for as a democratic candidate, it further reinforces the arguments put forward by most black leaders that Barack Obama isn't black enough, that Barack Obama doesn't stand for the black community's ideals and didn't, or his ancestors for that matter, share in the same bitter cup as other blacks during the slavery period. This alone may give Obama detractors and critics a perfect arsennal to further abstract his candidacy and pave the way for New Yok Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton to carry over the black vote. It will be interesting to see how this debacle unfurls.
Other candidates whose ancestors are said to have owned slaves include Arizona Senator John McCain and former Senator and Vice-Presidential candidate John Edwards.
